THE HOUSE

THE HOUSE

The original to the house

"The house in the game is based on where I lived as a poor student in London...the real house was actually bigger and can be found at the junction of Parkside Avenue and Somerset Road in Wimbledon. Its now an office building, but back then it was a private house that was up for sale. We were three students, Mark, Kerry and myself. We were there to discourage vandalism and squatting, which is a bit like putting the worst of the lunatics in charge of the asylum.

The owners even threw in a lady to clean and do our washing up and, best of all, this cost us nothing. The lady’s name was ’Kitty’. the character of Annie in the game is closly based on her and many of Annie’s words are taken directly from the stories Kitty would tell me over a cuppa in the kitchen when I got back after a hard half-day at art school. One day we boys were all lounging in the sitting room which, incedentally, boasted a rare ’sprung dance floor’, when an estate agent walked in with a red headed guy who was looking the property over.  When he had gone, Mark said. ‘You know who that was?’ We shook our heads.

'Ridley Scott!...that's who!'

He didn't buy the house.

For the game I kept the basic layout apart from adding the sitting room in the Attic. There were only some servant bedrooms up there in the real house. We also had two kitchens that were much larger than the basement kitchen in the game.

My punk band (we're so underground, I'm not going to give you the name!) used to practise in the Dining room, which was actually panelled in oak, the same as the billiard room in the game.

The owners still don’t know it, but we threw a secret Christmas party at the house with a couple of hundred guests, we basically just invited EVERYBODY we knew. Such bad boys we were! "
